Snakes in the Northeast overwinter underground in a hibernation-like state known as “brumation”. They often return to the same overwintering location, known as a “hibernaculum”, each winter, which often is below the frost line. Often they will overwinter together in large communal groups, sometimes including a mix of snake species, to help keep warm.
