Gray Foxes climb trees! They are the only canid (dog) species in North America that is able to climb trees. They have semi-retractable claws which enables them to do this. This helps keeps them safe from predators, such as coyotes, and they often actively hunt up in the crowns of trees easily jumping from crown to crown to move amongst trees. They are very common throughout the southern ~2/3rds of New England, but are rarely seen as they are mainly active on the ground at night.
